First Singapore Casino to Open This Month

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Resorts World at SentosaThe first of the two new city-state casino complexes has announced to open its doors at January 20. Singapore Resorts World Sentosa – the name of the new casino complex – includes a Festive Hotel, a Hard Rock Hotel, a Crockfords Tower, and a Hotel Michael.

Resorts World at Sentosa will – besides hotels and a casino – include a universal studios theme park and a Marine Life Park, the biggest in the world.

Singapore government decided to allow legalised casino gaming in 2005. The two new complexes should attract increasing tourism, boosting the local economy.

The second casino, the Marina Bay Sands, is scheduled to open in April 2010. The delay is caused by financial problems at subcontractors. The complex is another big investment by Las Vegas Sands Corp., who also owns properties in Las Vegas, Macua, and Pennsylvania.

New Legislation Allows Table Games in Pennsylvania

Friday, January 8th, 2010

People at the Casino TablesGovernor Rendell signed a legislation yesterday that allows Pennsylvania gaming halls to add table games to their floor. But before the action starts, casinos present in Pa. will have to wait for another 6 to 9 months to put the regulators in place.

Casino owners responded with much delight to the new legislation, and took immediate action to get the tables up as soon as possible. Las Vegas Sands was so confident about the passing of the new law that it already reserved most of the floor space of its new Sands Bethlehem for table games. The original plan to fill the floor with 2,000 slot machines was changed into only 250 machines.

The adding of table games to the Pennsylvania casinos is expected to create a lot of jobs. The Mounty Casino Resort in the Poconos is already looking for job candidates to fill the 275 to 350 new full time positions. At the same time, Mohegan Sun’s Robert Soper testified that the new casino dealers will be paid $6 or less without tips.

$2 Dollar BlackJack Back at the Tables

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

BlackJack TableRemember the times when you could go to Atlantic City with a $100 bill and have fun at the BlackJack tables the whole night? Well maybe it’s time to revive those times.

The oldest Atlantic City Casino announced the revival of the $2 BlackJack table. These low stake tables have been eliminated many years ago because of their low profitability. Now the management at Resorts Atlantic City has come up with a solution to keep profits up, while offering beginners the chance to participate at the BlackJack tables with small bets. The trick is that each player has to pay a 25 cent fee for every hand played at the table. So basically you’re betting $2.25 with a chance to win $4.

Before the new business model could come to the table it had to be approved by the New Jersey Control Commission. They approved it yesterday, so they should be spotted soon.

Macau Casino Investors on the Rise

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Venetian Macao ResortInvestors in Macau casino properties were a hot pick at the stock exchange during the first trading day of 2010. This after a report showed a 48% rise in monthly gambling revenues at China’s only place for legalized gambling. Casino operators such as MGM Mirage and Las Vegas Sands Corp. all have invested heavily in the ‘Vegas of the East’.

While casinos are struggling to keep their Vegas operations profitable, Macau looks like the solution to keep revenues up. While Americans have cut back on their gambling budgets, visiting Vegas less often and for shorter stays, the Asian consumers are finding their way to the casino tables.

MGM opened the MGM Grand Macau in December 2007, as the company tries to spread its risk across different markets. The Macau based casino was built in a 50/50 deal with Pansy Ho Chiu-king.

Las Vegas Sands Corp. owns two properties in the Chinese enclave, being the Venetian Macao Resort and the Sands Macao.

Washington DC expanding gambling

Monday, January 4th, 2010

In times of financial downfall governments are becoming more open to all sources of income, including gambling. With lottery revenues falling, governments are creating wider gambling options to increase gambling revenue.

The popular Mega Millions lottery that is now available in Maryland and Virginia only is coming to Washington soon. This way four big jackpots from scratch cards and daily lotteries will be hit in D.C. alone. In return Virginia is getting the Powerball lottery.

Keith Whyte, head of the National Council on Problem Gambling, states that governments are focussing solely on getting income from gambling and are ignoring the downsides. They have noticed an increase in availabillity of both legal and illegal gambling options. The government is however not putting extra money in gambling prevention.

The D.C. lottery generated $68.9 million in 2009, this is $1.4 down compared to 2008. The Virginia Lottery revenues went down $16 million to $439 million in 2009 and Maryland reported the biggest loss of $36 million, down from $529 in 2008 to $493 in 2009.

With the new exchanges and expansions of the state lotteries the states Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. expect to raise the gambling income with at least 5%.

Billionaire Carl Icahn Determined to Buy Trump Casinos

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

Trump Plaza Hotel and CasinoInvestor Carl Icahn showed his determination to buy out the bankrupt Trump Casinos in Atlantic City, by increasing his offer with another $125 million. The offer comes on top of the $486 million of debt that Icahn already agreed to buy out.

Trump Entertainment Inc. filed for bankruptcy for the third time last Tuesday, struggling to pay back its debt in the current state of the economy. The Casinos also experience fierce competition from slots parlors in Pennsylvania and New York.

Icahn is an experienced investor in the casino industry, who purchased the Las Vegas based Stratosphere out of bankruptcy for $300 million in 2000, only to sell it one and a half years later for $1.3 billion. Trump is not impressed by this however, telling the New York Post that Icahn “runs companies so badly that I think it’d be really bad for the company if he took over.” The always self-confident Donald Trump displayed his arrogance once again by asking the reporter the rhetorical question “Hey, who’s hotter than me? Nobody.” Icahn responded immediately by saying “If hot means being able to burn other people’s money, I guess he’s correct.”

The battle over the control of the three money burning casinos (i.e. Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort and Trump Marina Hotel Casino) will have to be decided by the court, but in the meantime we can enjoy the media battle that these two veterans are fighting.
